When I was little, my mummy used to sing me lullabies to lull me to sleep.
One of my favourites was 小白船 - Little White Boat, a whimsical children's folksong that still gets me all nostalgic in this day and age. The song follows a little white boat's journey as it sails across the sky. I've recently found out that it was originally a Korean folksong, written to distract and comfort little children in the face of the wars that were being waged at that time. True to its lyrics, the song is like a daydream - where you imagine faraway lands and sail away without a care in the world.
When mummy asked me to make her a bookmark for all the deep Chinese stuff that she reads, I of course wanted to make her something personal - inspired by this beautiful folk song.
Funny story - I always thought the first line of the song was "蓝蓝的天空, 白白的云, 有只小白船" - "In the blue sky, amidst the white clouds, there sails a little white boat" - hence the shiny white pearl at the tip of the bookmark, followed by aquamarine crystals with a dolphin link between and a little sail boat at the end. Turns out I had been wrong about the lyrics the whole time. The lyrics mean something more along the lines of - "In the blue sky, amidst the milky way, there sails a little white boat". So no fluffy white clouds. Wonder where I got that from. :p
This bookmark is now happily sandwiched between one of mummy's beloved books - hopefully they will accompany her as her imagination sails away to faraway lands - wherever the books lead her to.
